“A PR Strategy sounds great – for the future – but really isn’t something we’re interested in doing right now,” a client stated.
“But you already are doing PR…it’s just not the kind of PR you want,” I explained, referring to his organizations’ recent “trending” status on community Facebook pages (and not the good kind of trending…).
Truth is we all are involved in public relations 24/7, whether we know it or not.
The Public Relations Society of America defines public relations as “… the strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.”
Everything being said about your organization – by the organization and the community – is public relations (PR) in action.
Even if your organization doesn’t have an official “Public Relations Director”, everyone representing your brand – employees, clients, etc. – are all actively publicizing your organization.
For some, they are pushing out good publicity, helping build the organizations’ relationship with the community.
For others, they are destroying it.
PR is not really a choice – it’s a reality.
As organizational leaders, it’s up to us to develop a strategy to ensure our brand receives good PR and not just leave it up to random chance (word to the wise: those aren’t good odds).
Whether you’re actively pursuing publicity opportunities for your brand, or simply basking in ignorant bliss – we are ALL in the business of public relations ALL of the time.
Landing bad PR, yeah, that’s not too hard to do…just do something stupid. But cultivating good PR – that takes concerted effort and well-researched strategy.
By having a public relations strategy, we’re able to take control of our organizations’ message and ensure the community is hearing what we want heard about our company. In the absence of communication, inquiring minds will always concoct their own rumors to fill in the gaps.
Don’t leave your organization’s public relations strategy up to chance. Prioritize solid strategy development, and watch your organization’s community relations blossom. Check out our blog post, 3 Must-Have Tools for a Successful Public Relations Strategy, for additional information.
